The Africa Institute, Global Studies University, invites applications for the Tejumola Olaniyan Creative Writers-in-Residence Fellowship. This prestigious program celebrates and supports literary voices engaged in the creative expression of Africa and its diaspora across all forms and genres.
About the Fellowship
Named in honor of the late Nigerian scholar Tejumola Olaniyan, a renowned literary critic who made significant contributions to African and African diaspora studies, this fellowship upholds his legacy of intellectual rigor, creativity, and fostering new narratives.
Hosted by The Africa Institute in Sharjah, UAE, this program aligns with its mission as a globally oriented center dedicated to research, postgraduate studies, and critical discourse on Africa and its worldwide connections.
Fellowship Benefits
Selected fellows will receive:
A grant of 50,000 AED for the duration of the fellowship
Accommodation in Sharjah, UAE
Round-trip airfare
Visa sponsorship
A monthly stipend of 10,000 AED
Eligibility Criteria
The fellowship is open to both emerging and established creative writers. Applicants must meet the following criteria:
A strong record of literary excellence, including awards, fellowships, or other forms of recognition
Actively working on a major literary project (e.g., novel, memoir, essay collection, poetry, film script, or full-length play)
At least one published work (book, journal, or recognized online platform) or a substantial portfolio demonstrating commitment to writing
Themes related to Africa and the African diaspora are strongly encouraged
Applicants who employ innovative storytelling, form, or language will receive priority
Preference is given to works that contribute to critical literary culture, scholarship, or public discourse

Applicants must submit:
CV/résumé
A two-page summary (single-spaced, font size 12) outlining the project to be undertaken during the residency, its significance, and proposed completion date
A sample of published or unpublished writing (if submitting a book, attach it separately)
