Payments will be made via BACs, requiring a valid UK bank account.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for this scholarship, applicants must:
Be currently seeking asylum in the UK or be a dependant, spouse, or civil partner of someone seeking asylum.
Provide proof of immigration status.
Have a conditional or unconditional offer for a full-time one-year Master’s program at Northumbria University (starting September 2025).
Meet all course entry requirements, including English language proficiency.
Be residing in the North East of England (Tyne and Wear, County Durham, Northumberland, Cleveland, or North Cumbria).
Be ineligible for UK student finance (tuition fee or maintenance loans) due to immigration status.
If applying as a dependant, must have had the relationship established before the original asylum application.
Application Process
Step 1: Submit Your Application
Complete the Sanctuary Scholarship application form.
Submit before 16:00 on Friday, 25 April 2025.
Only applicants currently residing in the UK will be considered.
Step 2: Prepare Your Documents
Applicants must submit the following documents: Proof of immigration status.
Official offer letter from Northumbria University.
Any relevant supporting documents.
Selected applicants will be invited for an interview.
Step 3: Selection & Notification
Applications are assessed based on the form, supporting documents, and interview performance.
Successful candidates will be notified via email.
Unsuccessful applicants will not be contacted.
Important Information
This scholarship is only available for students unable to access UK student finance due to their immigration status.
The cash award is contingent on full course registration.
If the student’s immigration status changes, they must inform Northumbria University immediately.
Sanctuary Scholars cannot hold other Northumbria University scholarships simultaneously.
If a student defers or withdraws, the scholarship will be revoked.
The scholarship is valid for one academic year only.
