The program will offer scholarships over 10 years for undergraduate and graduate students at Makerere University’s main campus, focusing on supporting talented individuals from Sub-Saharan Africa who face economic barriers to higher education.
Makerere University has announced the second cohort of 190 undergraduate and 11 master’s scholarships through the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program for students joining under the Private Sponsorship Scheme in the 2025/2026 academic year.

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Makerere University will provide 1,000 scholarships over 10 years, covering both undergraduate and graduate levels.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Makerere University’s main campus, applicants must fall into one of the following categories: Ugandan nationals, refugees, students with disabilities, internally displaced young people, or international students.
Applicants must also meet the following conditions:
– Must have applied for admission to Makerere University under the Private Sponsorship Scheme for the 2025/2026 academic year.
– Must have either:
– Completed their advanced secondary level education (or its equivalent) in an African country, or
– Hold a second-class/credit diploma from a recognized institution, or
– Passed the mature age entry examination of Makerere University.
– Must be experiencing financial hardships.
– Must not be a holder of any other scholarship, including the Government of Uganda Scholarship.
– Must not have completed any undergraduate degree program.
– Must demonstrate leadership potential and/or community service.
– Must be 28 years old or younger at the application deadline.
– Applicants in the Refugee or Persons with Disabilities categories should be 32 years old or younger at the application deadline.
